Disposing of Unwanted Drugs

As an additional initiative, we realized that much of the Opioid addiction has started with the use of prescription pain killers. People often leave unused medications in their medicine cabinets where they are consumed by family members or others who then develop a dependency. We have been distributing to pharmacies a display at the cash register advertising free "Deterra" packets in which one can place unused pills in a pouch with water and simply throw them out with the trash. Many people are unaware or hesitant to drop off used drugs at local drop off locations – often at police department. Deterra packets deactivate the drug and allows for simple and safe disposal.

Our Task Force began with the goals of improving education and awareness regarding addiction, sharing prevention strategies, and improving access to service. As part of this effort, we produced 3 Videos which are available at no charge (please go to www.rotarydistrict7890.org) to be used by Rotary Clubs in their own communities:

A). “THE OPIOID CRISIS: THE BRAIN AND ADDICTION”- Produced in cooperation with the Elks for use with the general public and schools. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiU6UMiIRUU&t=81s

B). “The OPIOiD CRISIS: THE HOPE INITIATIVE” – An exploration of a program where law enforcement has an alternative to arrest and incarceration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vCjL3g5lDQ&ab_channel=WestHartfordCommunityInteractive

C) “ADDICTION IN THE WORKPLACE: A LEGAL PERSPECTIVE” – This program has an excellent introduction by a Yale professor discussing addiction and provides a panel of legal experts on the issues every employer should know when dealing with employees suffering with addiction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7wZHYonX8Y&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=WestHartfordCommunityInteractive
